Wandsworth Legacy & Hope Black History Month Concert brings professional singers and community performers together in Tooting for an uplifting evening celebrating African and Caribbean musical heritage.
Presented by Pegasus Opera Company as part of Wandsworth’s Black History 365 programme, the free concert combines opera, gospel, spirituals and music inspired by African and Caribbean traditions.
Pegasus Opera Company has spent decades working to increase representation within classical music and opera while creating opportunities for artists from African, Caribbean and Asian heritage.
The Legacy & Hope programme reflects that mission by bringing different musical traditions together and demonstrating how classical music can speak to audiences and communities from many backgrounds.
Opera and classical music are sometimes presented as traditions belonging primarily to European history. However, generations of Black composers, singers and musicians have contributed to classical music while developing their own distinctive approaches to performance and storytelling.
Gospel and spiritual music have an equally important history, emerging from Black communities and carrying stories of faith, struggle, resistance, community and hope across generations.
The concert will feature professional performers alongside community voices, creating an evening in which established artists and local participants share the same stage.
According to Pegasus Opera Company’s Artistic Director Alison Buchanan, Legacy & Hope is about recognising the contribution of Caribbean heritage to classical music and opera while bringing together opera, spirituals, gospel and Caribbean musical traditions.
That combination makes the concert particularly appropriate for Black History Month, demonstrating how music can preserve cultural memory while continuing to evolve as new generations add their own voices.
The wider project also includes work with African and Caribbean elders, using singing, storytelling, music and reminiscence to create opportunities for people to share memories and celebrate cultural heritage.
Taking place at St Nicholas Church in Tooting, the concert offers audiences an opportunity to experience high-quality live performance in an accessible community setting.
Wandsworth Legacy & Hope Black History Month Concert is free to attend, but advance booking is recommended.
Everyone is welcome.
