Talk on Sophia Duleep Singh The Indian Suffragette

Wednesday 1 December 2021

Come and join us to celebrate the life of Sophia Duleep Singh and hear about the journey of creating a picture book for people of all ages.

Local authors Poppy and Jen have recently published their first illustrated book aimed at children and adults, ‘Remembering Sophia’. They will be reading from the book and presenting a talk about Sophia, followed with a book signing.

Sophia Duleep Singh was the granddaughter of the last king of the Punjab, Ranjit Singh, she was also Queen Victoria’s god daughter. Sophia lived through key moments in British and Indian history and took part in significant struggles for democracy and freedom. Sophia fundraised for the lascars, worked with the Red Cross during World War One and was a leading suffragette. However, until recently she has been virtually invisible in history.
