Theatre and Music creative Mandy Parker-Sharp brings African Deeds to Lambeth, after a successful launch of her Black British family collection and book, at the Black Cultural Archives.
Inspired by her great-granddad’s 1899 land title deeds, which pass through three generations, Mandy presents a rare African ancestry story, one of pre ‘Windrush’ immigration with standout characters that include pioneering Pentecostalist and African businessman Thomas Brem-Wilson (1865-1929), known as the ‘Black Pastor of Peckham’, ‘Mr Bingo’ Philip Brem-Wilson (1908 -1999), a Song and Dance man who got involved with south London gangsters The Richardsons, and ‘Nina the Great’, Nina Brem-Wilson (1937 -2021), a Lewisham and Deptford market-worker who, in search of her African ancestry, finds gold!
Mandy’s taking her archive ‘on the road’, using her book African Deeds, visual and sound materials, readings, and ancient documents in multi-media vibrant storytelling. A real treat for this year’s Black History Month.
