Great Big Live Assembly: Black History Month 2026 – Secondary Schools gives secondary schools across Britain an opportunity to join a shared national event exploring Black history, community and contemporary role models.
Organised by the Sanctuary Foundation, the online assembly has been designed specifically for secondary-age students and can be incorporated easily into the school day.
The programme is hosted by presenter Gemma Hunt and author and speaker Dr Krish Kandiah OBE, alongside Black role models and invited contributors.
The 2026 programme explores the theme Honouring Our Communities, encouraging young people to consider the individuals, organisations and groups whose actions strengthen communities around them.
Black History Month provides schools with an opportunity to broaden students’ understanding of British history and recognise the contributions of people whose experiences have sometimes been overlooked in traditional teaching.
The assembly also encourages students to think about the connection between history and the present, recognising that Black history continues to be created through the actions and achievements of people today.
Because the programme is delivered online, secondary schools throughout the UK can participate without the cost or practical challenges associated with travelling to an external event.
