Pioneers of Comedy 2026 – Black History Month Special

Saturday 24th October 2026

Pioneers of Comedy 2026 – Black History Month Special brings together established names and a new generation of performers for an evening celebrating the contribution Black comedians have made to British entertainment.

Taking place at the historic Hackney Empire, the event pays tribute to comedians who helped open doors for Black performers within British stand-up, television, radio and theatre while introducing audiences to emerging talent continuing that tradition today.

The line-up includes leading figures from British Black comedy, including Richard Blackwood, Slim and Robbie Gee, alongside additional established and next-generation performers.

Black British comedy has developed enormously over recent decades. Performers who initially built audiences through community venues, comedy clubs and independent promotions helped create opportunities that have since led to much greater Black representation across mainstream television, radio, theatre and online entertainment.

Those pioneers often developed their careers at a time when opportunities for Black comedians within mainstream British entertainment were considerably more limited. Their success helped demonstrate the size and enthusiasm of audiences for comedy rooted in Black British experiences while opening the industry to subsequent generations.

Pioneers of Comedy brings those generations together, recognising performers who helped establish the scene while providing a platform for comedians developing their own careers today.

The choice of Hackney Empire provides an appropriate setting for the celebration. The theatre has a long history as one of London’s major entertainment venues and has hosted generations of performers from across Britain’s diverse communities.

Taking place during Black History Month 2026, the evening combines entertainment with recognition of an important part of contemporary Black British cultural history, celebrating the performers who helped change British comedy and those carrying that legacy forward.
