African Soul Rebels brings a powerful celebration of contemporary African music to Nottingham, bringing together artists whose work connects musical tradition, cultural identity and new sounds.
Headlining the evening are Les Amazones d’Afrique, the acclaimed West African collective formed in Bamako, Mali, and known for combining powerful vocal harmonies with music rooted in African traditions and contemporary electronic production.
The collective was originally formed by leading Malian artists and activists including Mamani Keïta, Oumou Sangaré and Mariam Doumbia and has since expanded to include musicians from across Africa and the diaspora.
Their work places women’s voices at the centre, combining music with messages about equality, empowerment and social change.
Les Amazones d’Afrique have performed internationally, including on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, and their music has reached audiences around the world.
Joining them is Gasper Nali, a musician from Malawi known for performing with his extraordinary three-metre-long homemade babatoni bass guitar. Accompanied by percussion and guitar, Nali creates energetic Afro rhythms rooted in Malawian musical traditions.
The evening also features N’famady Kouyaté, a musician from Guinea whose primary instrument is the balafon, a traditional West African wooden xylophone closely connected to the griot tradition.
Kouyaté combines his West African musical heritage with contemporary influences and has built a growing audience in Britain since relocating to Wales.
African Soul Rebels forms part of the 25th anniversary of Music Beyond Mainstream, which has spent decades introducing African and diaspora artists to audiences across the UK.
For Black History Month audiences, the concert offers an opportunity to experience African creativity as something living and continually evolving, connecting musical heritage with contemporary performance.
African Soul Rebels takes place at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham on Thursday 15th October 2026 at 7:30pm.
