Experience the music of Michael Jackson in an entirely different setting as a string quartet performs some of his best-known songs by candlelight at Nottingham Contemporary.
The concert takes Jackson’s catalogue away from the scale of the stadium or pop concert and reimagines it through classical strings.
The programme includes music such as Rock With You, Human Nature, Billie Jean, Man in the Mirror, Smooth Criminal, Remember the Time, Earth Song, They Don’t Really Care About Us and Thriller.
Jackson’s music crossed genres including pop, soul, funk, disco and rhythm and blues, helping him become one of the most internationally recognised performers of the twentieth century.
His influence extended far beyond record sales. His approach to choreography, fashion, visual storytelling and the music video transformed popular entertainment and inspired generations of performers around the world.
Jackson’s achievements were also significant within the history of Black popular music. His extraordinary international success challenged barriers facing African American artists within mainstream broadcasting and helped expand the possibilities for Black performers in global pop culture.
Presenting his songs through a string quartet gives audiences an opportunity to hear the melodies and musical construction behind familiar recordings in a new way.
Candlelight: Tribute to Michael Jackson takes place at Nottingham Contemporary on Saturday 3rd October 2026 at 8:30pm.
The performance lasts approximately 60 minutes.
