Suntou Susso & The Gambian Superstars

Wednesday 21st October 2026

Experience the extraordinary musical traditions of West Africa as Suntou Susso & The Gambian Superstars bring kora music, song and the ancient griot tradition to Nottingham.

Suntou Susso is a Gambian-born multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and virtuoso player of the kora, the West African harp-lute closely associated with Mandinka griot families.

Born into a centuries-old griot tradition, Susso belongs to a culture in which music is inseparable from storytelling, genealogy and the preservation of community history.

For generations, griots have acted as oral historians, carrying stories, songs and knowledge from one generation to another.

Susso’s compositions remain rooted in this Afro-Manding heritage while also drawing on influences from funk, folk, jazz and soul.

For this special concert he is joined by leading Gambian musicians, creating a full ensemble sound that connects traditional forms with contemporary energy.

For Black History Month audiences, the concert offers an opportunity to experience African history as a living cultural tradition.

Rather than viewing heritage solely through archives or exhibitions, the griot tradition demonstrates how history can be remembered and transmitted through music, poetry and performance.

The kora itself has centuries of history in West Africa and remains one of the region’s most distinctive instruments.

Suntou Susso & The Gambian Superstars takes place at the Djanogly Theatre, Lakeside Arts, on Wednesday 21st October 2026 at 7:30pm.
