Step back in time for a celebration of Lewisham’s reggae history and legacy, honouring the music, memories, venues and community spaces of years gone by.
Hosted by Nzinga Dance Company and supported by Lewisham Council, The Lewisham Lovers Rock Lounge invites people from across the generations to celebrate the borough’s resilient Caribbean community.
The evening features three special guest selectors:
Lloyd Coxsone
The legendary reggae pioneer, producer and operator of Coxsone Sound. He produced Louisa Marks’ influential 1975 recording Caught You in a Lie, widely recognised as an important early record in the development of British lovers rock.
DJ Melvina Moves
An experienced selector whose festival appearances include Boomtown and the London International Ska Festival. She has provided stage support for reggae icons including Don Letts, Dawn Penn, David Rodigan, The Dualers, Janet Kay and Carroll Thompson.
DJ Ade
DJ Ade will present a special tribute to the late Brockley artist June Reid, also known as Junie Rankin. Reid was the other half of the longstanding all-female sound system Nzinga Soundz alongside Ade.
The event will also feature a display of iconic photographs celebrating Lewisham’s reggae history and legacy, alongside a Black History mini-market.
Nzinga Dance is an African Caribbean community arts organisation that brings culture and history to life through the arts. Elements Bar is an established Black-owned community venue.
Accessibility: The venue has step-free entry and is wheelchair accessible.
