Beyond Awareness: Exploring How Race and Culture Impact Our Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation

Join leading researchers, academics and safeguarding practitioners for an important Black History Month conversation examining how race, culture and ethnicity can influence responses to child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Developed as part of Black History Month, Beyond Awareness creates space for thoughtful conversations about some of the more complex issues affecting safeguarding practice.

Through research, evidence and professional experience, the series challenges assumptions, encourages reflection and supports more informed and culturally responsive approaches to protecting children and young people.

The inaugural forum, Culture, Race and Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, brings together researchers, academics and practitioners whose work has helped shape national understanding of these issues.

Drawing on published research, professional practice and years of experience working alongside children, families and communities, the speakers will share the evidence behind their work, emerging research themes and the implications for safeguarding policy and practice.

Designed as an informal online Lunch and Learn session, the event gives professionals an opportunity to step away from the demands of the working day, bring their lunch and join a conversation that is both evidence-informed and practical.

Each speaker will introduce their work before sharing important findings and reflections from their research. Participants will be able to learn directly from people who have helped shape thinking and professional practice in this field.

The forum will conclude with a chaired panel discussion exploring cultural humility versus cultural competence. The panel will consider what these concepts mean in practice, where existing approaches may fall short and how organisations can strengthen safeguarding responses for children and young people from ethnically diverse communities.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Develop their understanding of current research
  • Hear directly from leading researchers and practitioners
  • Consider how culture and ethnicity influence safeguarding practice
  • Reflect on cultural humility and cultural competence
  • Identify practical learning that can be applied within their organisation

The event is particularly relevant to people working in policing, healthcare, education, local authorities, social care, youth justice, voluntary and community organisations, safeguarding partnerships, academia, research, policy and commissioning. Students with an interest in safeguarding are also welcome.

This free online event offers an opportunity to engage in discussion and consider how research and professional practice can improve outcomes for children, young people and their families.
