Honouring Our UoM Community – Portrait Project Launch
Friday 23rd October 2026
The University of Manchester launches a new portrait project celebrating Black members of its community through photography and storytelling.
Honouring Our UoM Community will recognise the experiences and contributions of Black students, colleagues and alumni connected with the University.
Portrait photography will be combined with personal stories, creating a permanent record of the people who have helped shape life at the institution.
The photographs will be displayed across the University campus, allowing students, staff and visitors to encounter the stories of Black people from different generations and backgrounds.
Importantly, the portraits and accompanying stories will also be preserved in the University archives.
That means the project will not simply exist for Black History Month 2026, but will become part of the University’s historical record for future students, researchers and communities to explore.
The project reflects this year’s wider Black History Month focus on Honouring Our Communities by recognising people whose contribution to institutions and communities may not always receive public attention.
The launch takes place at Manchester Museum’s Kanaris Theatre.
