Melanin Marvels Festival – Black History Month Children’s Festival

Saturday 10th October 2026

Melanin Marvels Festival – Black History Month Children’s Festival comes to Birmingham for a vibrant celebration of children’s literature, cultural identity, imagination and positive representation.

Presented by Ananse Arts, the festival places Black and ethnically diverse children at the centre of stories in which they can see themselves as heroes, leaders and adventurers.

Children’s books and storytelling can play an important role in shaping how young people understand themselves and the world around them. Seeing characters who reflect their appearance, families, cultures and experiences can help children recognise that their stories belong within Britain’s wider cultural landscape.

Melanin Marvels combines that message with the energy of a children’s festival, bringing together books, storytelling, creativity and activities designed to encourage young imaginations.

The organisers describe the festival as a celebration of Black and ethnic children’s stories, cultural pride and superhero identity, drawing inspiration from African, Caribbean, South Asian and other heritages.

Its venue, the Legacy Centre of Excellence, is itself an important Black-led cultural space in Birmingham, dedicated to arts, business, heritage and community development.

Taking place during Black History Month 2026, Melanin Marvels offers families a positive, child-centred event celebrating confidence, creativity and representation.
