On Record: In Conversation with TJ Rehmi

Thursday 26th May

Steel Pulse bassist Amlak Tafari and broadcaster Satnam Rana present twenty-two conversations with Birmingham musicians, promoters, managers, venue owners and entrepreneurs who have all contributed to local, national, and international music culture.

Join us and our special guests for conversations about their lives in music, their connections to the city, and how Birmingham has inspired or influenced them, personally and musically.

Selected dates also feature free live performances from the artists appearing On Record. The first of its kind, On Record is a multi-artist, multi-genre concept album forming a sonic love letter to the city of Birmingham. Produced as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival, the eleven-track album will be available on a limited vinyl release and across all streaming platforms.

Tj Rehmi is a critically acclaimed artist known for his creative and innovative approach to composition and production work. In this conversation we delve into his influences as a guitarist, composer and producer, whose experiments with technology and Asian sounds were to become part of the ‘Asian Underground’ movement.

During the early ‘80s, Rehmi studied and played guitar with local funk, rock, and reggae bands, before joining Andy Hamilton’s jazz band as a rhythm guitarist. He later explored the burgeoning bhangra scene as a session player and designed and built his own studio space which developed into a music production hub, aka the MoodLab Studio. His latest album Eight Grains of Sand is to be released this year.
