Yorùbá Black History Month 2026 brings families and communities together at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre for an afternoon and evening celebrating Yorùbá language, heritage and culture.
Presented by Èdè Mi, the event creates a welcoming environment where people of different generations can explore cultural identity while strengthening connections with one of Africa’s major languages and cultural traditions.
The 2026 programme centres around the theme “Kíni Ìtumọ̀ Orúkọ Rẹ?” – “What is the meaning of your name?”
Names hold particular significance within Yorùbá culture and can reflect family circumstances, history, hopes, faith and identity. The theme encourages participants to discover the meanings and stories carried through names and to consider how cultural knowledge is passed between generations.
Throughout the day, visitors can expect activities and conversations designed to celebrate Yorùbá heritage while creating opportunities for children, parents and elders to participate together.
The event also provides an accessible introduction for people who may have little previous knowledge of Yorùbá language or culture.
Taking place during Black History Month 2026, the celebration highlights the diversity within Britain’s Black communities and the importance of preserving African languages, traditions and cultural knowledge.
