BlackFest brings food, creativity, independent makers and music together under the glass of Sefton Park Palm House for a relaxed Sunday afternoon celebrating community and Black creativity.
Plant-Based Goodness, Arts, Crafts & Market combines several strands of the festival’s programme in one accessible event. Plant-based food from Yammtree sits alongside arts and crafts activity, independent handmade products and music, creating a setting in which visitors can browse, eat, make and connect rather than simply watch a performance from a seat.
Visual artist Layla Gibiliru is part of the creative programme, while Liverpool DJ Shanay Maxwell provides a soulful soundtrack for the afternoon. The format reflects BlackFest’s wider approach: bringing different art forms and community experiences into the same space and making cultural participation feel informal and welcoming.
The Palm House is an especially attractive setting for this kind of event. Surrounded by plants in the heart of Sefton Park, it provides an open, family-friendly environment for a programme that places wellbeing and social connection alongside art and culture.
For Black History Month, the event offers an important counterpoint to talks about injustice and historical struggle. Black cultural life is also expressed through food, craft, music, enterprise, friendship and the everyday spaces where people gather. Supporting independent makers and community-led creative work is part of recognising how culture is sustained in the present.
BlackFest has grown from Liverpool as a grassroots Black arts festival, nurturing artists and creating opportunities across music, visual art, literature, theatre, film and community activity. This market-style event makes that work accessible to people who may not ordinarily attend a formal arts venue.
