We are very excited to welcome our key note speaker Montana Williamson.

Montana is a freelance knitwear designer, creative and alumni from Central St Martins. Her creative practice revolves around knitwear and textile futures. She has collaborated with designers including Dolce and Gabbana, Bruce Aice Aime and Jasper Gavida. Her graduate collection entitled future beauty won the 2011 UK Handkniting Association Award. Her work is a combination of Handknitting and crochet, she uses three dimensional pieces. Her award winning work marries elements of sustainability and fashion, her work questions the social issues of waste within the fashion industry.

She now works for the luxury fashion brand Kate Spade New York where she is the European Visual Manager. Within this role Montana works with fashion and creates a relationship with fashion to attract engage and motivate individuals within the retail environments. Styling is used to provoke reactions

Montana is also a ‘Shades of Noir’ graduate who’s aims are to provoke, challenge and encourage dialogue through its programme of activities on the subject of race within Art, Design & Higher Education

Montana will discuss her journey from industry expert to academic and now, leading on the programme called ‘Teaching Within’.

How she has utilised her experience as a woman of colour to help dismantle ignorance regarding attainment, marginalisation and lack of diversity and how the work of Shades of Noir is helping to support decolonisation of the curriculum and thus enhance student experience at UAL

‘Teaching Within’ is a programme created by Shades of Noir founder Aisha Richards to address the under representation of BAME academics within UAL.

Montana will discuss the highlights and difficulties she encountered whilst participating on the programme and how it has enhanced her understanding to help develop and support it in the future.
