Join host Carol Ann Whitehead and special guest Councillor Hilaria Asumu for an evening of thoughtful conversation, shared dining and cultural exchange in The Portico Library’s iconic Members’ Reading Room.
The inaugural Portico Ubuntu: Diaspora Dine & Discussion brings together heritage, food and community in one of Manchester’s most historic literary settings. The event marks a century since the beginnings of the observance that developed into Black History Month.
The evening will begin with a drinks reception beneath The Portico’s magnificent dome. Carol Ann Whitehead, Chair of The Portico Library’s Public Programme Committee, will introduce Ledger of Liberation – Portico Ubuntu, offering guests an insight into the exhibition, its contributors and its stories of resilience, identity and collective achievement.
Guests will then be welcomed into the Members’ Reading Room for a specially curated dining experience. The Portico Kitchen’s menu, created by lead chef Pete Moody, draws inspiration from the culinary traditions and cultural origins of the African diaspora.
Special guest Councillor Hilaria Asumu will share her vision for strengthening communities through connection, leadership and collaboration. Her contribution will reflect on the importance of building lasting relationships across cultures and generations.
More than a dinner, this event is an invitation to gather around the table, exchange ideas, celebrate culture and honour the enduring legacy of Black history.
