Threaded Legacies – Black Heritage in Manchester Museum
Friday 23rd to Friday 30th October 2026
A new Black History Month exhibition at Manchester Museum brings together artwork created by local school pupils and inspired by the Museum’s African collections.
Threaded Legacies – Black Heritage in Manchester Museum gives young people the opportunity to explore African heritage, history and identity through objects held within the Museum’s collections.
The exhibition reflects on the stories carried by museum objects and asks how younger generations can respond creatively to histories that connect Manchester with Africa and the wider African Diaspora.
The work has been created by local schools, giving children and young people a direct role in interpreting heritage rather than simply viewing it.
By placing their artwork inside Manchester Museum, the exhibition also creates a dialogue between historical collections and contemporary Black British experiences.
It forms part of Manchester Museum’s wider Black History Month programme and offers families, schools and visitors an accessible way to explore questions of heritage, representation and belonging.
The exhibition runs from Friday 23rd to Friday 30th October 2026.
Opening hours are 10am to 5pm.
Admission is free and no advance booking is required.
