Sunday Piano Series: Amiri Harewood

Sunday 25 January

Young British rising-star pianist Amiri Harewood takes the spotlight with a sweeping programme that journeys across continents and centuries. Making his concerto debut as a teenager, Harewood has already built a reputation for depth, flair and musical curiosity.

The recital opens in Russia with Rachmaninov’s preludes, including the famous Alla Marcia, followed by Shostakovich’s sharply contrasted miniatures—a stately sarabande and a glistening fugue. From America comes George Walker’s Fifth Sonata (2003), a condensed, five-minute work of taut energy and brilliance.

The programme then travels to Nigeria with Joshua Uzoigwe’s rhythmically charged piece, inspired by traditional dance rituals honouring a river deity. To close, Granados’s Seven Waltzes bring a flourish of Spanish colour and dance, dazzling with their lyrical charm and vibrant textures.

Part of the popular Sunday Piano Series, this performance is informal and relaxed, with music introduced from the stage. Audiences are invited to meet the artist in the bar afterwards—before heading home in time for Sunday lunch.
