1898 Reading Group: The 1619 Project by Nikole Hannah-Jones

Sunday 30 January 2022

1898 is a reading group whose goal is social justice and racial equality.

Please join us for a discussion of The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story, by Nicole Hannah-Jones on Sunday, January 30, from 2:00-3:30 PM.

The 1619 Project has been a lightning rod for the struggle of truthfully telling America’s history of slavery, race, and white supremacy. Pejoratively referred to as so-called “critical race theory” by critics (with little clarification of what this means), the 1619 Project, in this newly published volume, is a collection of thematic essays and poems edited by Nicole Hannah-Jones, and includes contributions from writers we have previously read in the 1898 Reading Group.

1898 is a reading group launched by Reggie Shuford and Greg Lindquist, who were both born and raised in Wilmington, NC, under different lived experiences, and who became friends and collaborators on this project that strives for racial justice, equality and liberation.

Our wish for this reading group is to help educate through a focus on stories of racial oppression and sometimes triumph, emphasizing historical patterns and connections that speak to larger systemic inequalities in our nation.
