On May 13, 1888, Brazilian Princess Isabel of Bragança signed Imperial Law number 3,353. It was a simple law, contained just 18 words, it is one of the most important pieces of legislation in Brazilian history – The “Golden Law” (Lei Aurea) abolished slavery in all its forms. For 350 years, slavery was the heart of the Brazilian economy.
We calculate that more than 40 percent of the 10 million enslaved African brought to the New World ended up in Brazil. Unfortunately the official history of Brazil erased some important facts in our history. More than 100 years Slavery was officially finished in the country. Can we really celebrate the “end” of Slavery in Brazil?
