Afro-Hair Fayre

Saturday 24th October 2026

The Afro-Hair Fayre offers a culturally safe and welcoming space where families can explore identity, build confidence and learn practical skills for caring for Afro and textured hair.

Presented with Nurture Academy, a local social enterprise providing empowering haircare education, the day combines hands-on learning with gentle styling and professional support.

From 12pm to 2pm, the Learn to Braid Workshop will introduce participants to practical braiding skills and techniques for working with Afro and textured hair.

From 2pm to 5pm, the Haircuts and Hairstyling Hub will offer gentle haircuts and styling in a supportive environment.

The fayre provides an opportunity to explore the important relationship between hair, culture, identity and self-expression while helping children, young people and adults develop confidence and practical haircare knowledge.

The event forms part of Honouring Our Communities, a Black History Month 2026 programme created for and with residents of Tower Hamlets.

Accessibility notice: Jena the Narrowboat does not have wheelchair or step-free access. The toilets aboard the boat are out of order, but toilets—including baby-changing facilities—are available inside the Poplar Union building.
