Celebrate the past, present and future of Wolverhampton’s Black community through sport, music, photography, art, storytelling and shared memories.
The Black History and Heritage Wolverhampton Showcase returns to Wolverhampton Art Gallery for a special evening dedicated to the people, communities and cultural movements that have helped shape the city.
At the heart of this year’s showcase is the story of the 3C Warriors, celebrating the team’s journey, the people behind it and its important place within Wolverhampton’s Black sporting and community history.
Through photographs, memories, personal stories and memorabilia, the exhibition will bring the story of the 3C Warriors to life and help preserve its legacy for future generations.
Four themed spaces
Visitors will be taken on a journey through Wolverhampton’s Black history and heritage across four specially themed areas:
- Our Journey & Sound
- Our Champions
- Our Future
- Our Community
Together, these spaces will explore the city’s history through sport, music, photography, art, community stories and lived experiences.
The showcase will revisit the 1982 Wolverhampton–Jamaica Youth Exchange, organised by Crypt Associations and supported by Wolverhampton Youth Service. Visitors will discover the stories and memories of those who took part and the lasting relationships created by the exchange.
Wolverhampton’s Black History Trails
The evening will also explore Wolverhampton’s Black History Trails, uncovering the people, places and stories connected to the city’s Black heritage.
These trails highlight the achievements and contributions of Black residents who have influenced Wolverhampton’s civic, cultural and community life.
Celebrating Black art
The event will recognise Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s significant collection of work by Black British artists and the importance of Black creativity and cultural expression within the gallery and the wider story of the city.
Visitors will be able to consider how artists have documented identity, community, resistance and change through different forms of creative expression.
Music, photography and community memories
The showcase will explore Wolverhampton’s sound-system culture, including the story of Exodus, and the role music has played in bringing communities together.
It will also feature the powerful photographs taken in Wolverhampton in 1978 by internationally respected photographer Chris Steele-Perkins, capturing important moments from the city and its communities.
There will be live storytelling and contributions from community members, alongside interactive creative workshops.
Visitors can get involved in music activities with Beatsabar and painting with Rene, creating opportunities for different generations to participate, share memories and contribute to Wolverhampton’s continuing story.
This is more than an exhibition. It is an opportunity to celebrate, remember, discover and preserve Wolverhampton’s Black history and heritage—honouring those who came before us, recognising those making a difference today and inspiring the generations who will carry these stories forward.
The event is free and open to everyone.
Wolverhampton Art Gallery has level access throughout the building and lift access to all floors. Noise-cancelling headphones and quiet spaces are also available.
