Upfront Comedy

Sunday 4th October 2026

Upfront Comedy comes to Wolverhampton Grand Theatre for a major night of stand-up created especially for Black History Month 2026, bringing together established Black comedy favourites, diverse voices and emerging talent on one stage.

The line-up features Richard Blackwood, Shazia Mirza, Michael Akadiri and Kyra Gray, with Shabba Kariem hosting the evening. Together, they offer a broad mix of comedy styles, perspectives and experiences for a show designed to deliver both big laughs and a celebration of the diversity of contemporary British comedy.

Richard Blackwood has built a career spanning stand-up comedy, television, radio, music and acting. One of the most recognisable Black British entertainers of his generation, his comedy draws upon family, relationships, popular culture and everyday life.

He is joined by Michael Akadiri, a comedian and practising doctor whose comedy explores everything from work and family to identity and the expectations people place upon us.

Shazia Mirza has established an international reputation for sharp, fearless stand-up that examines culture, politics, relationships and social expectations, while Kyra Gray represents a new generation of performers making their mark on the British comedy circuit.

Holding the evening together is host Shabba Kariem, helping create the energetic atmosphere for which Upfront Comedy events have become known.

The Grand Theatre explicitly states that this event has been curated for Black History Month, making it one of the clearest dedicated Black History Month events in Wolverhampton’s 2026 cultural programme.

Comedy has long provided a space in which Black British performers can discuss subjects that might be more difficult to address elsewhere. Through humour, performers can explore identity, family, race, relationships and British life while connecting those experiences with audiences from many different backgrounds.

Upfront Comedy at the Grand celebrates that tradition while bringing together established names and newer voices for a night centred first and foremost on entertainment.

Expect bold observations, stories drawn from real life and plenty of laughter in one of Wolverhampton’s most historic venues.
