Glasgow Black History Walking Tour

Sunday 5 October

Discover Glasgow’s hidden history on a guided walking tour that explores the city’s mercantile past and its deep connections with tobacco, slavery, and the abolition movement. This thought-provoking journey sheds light on the stories often left untold, offering a new perspective on familiar streets and landmarks.

Led by experienced guides Amy Rich and Lucien Staddon Foster, the walk provides an engaging and accessible way to learn about the people and events that shaped the city. Their knowledge brings Glasgow’s history to life, encouraging reflection on how this legacy continues to resonate today.

The route begins at the David Livingstone Memorial Statue in Cathedral Square and makes its way downhill through the city. Participants will pass Castle Street, College Street, and continue along Ingram Street, tracing paths that connect to Glasgow’s trading past.

Designed to last between 1.5 to 2 hours, the walk is suitable for a wide range of participants. The longest stretch of continuous walking is around 5–10 minutes, ensuring a comfortable pace for most. The tour concludes outside the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) at Royal Exchange Square.

Accessibility has been carefully considered. The walk is step-free, though participants should be prepared for road crossings and some cobbled paths with uneven surfaces. Anyone with questions about the route or specific requirements is welcome to contact Amy directly at amy@crer.org.uk.

This walking tour offers not only an educational experience but also an opportunity to connect with the city in a new way. By the end, participants will gain a richer understanding of Glasgow’s role in global history and the enduring impact of its mercantile legacy.
