Out-Spoken is the Southbank Centre’s resident night of poetry and live music, showcasing some of the most exciting voices on the UK and international scene. Hosted by TS Eliot Prize- and Polari Prize-winning poet Joelle Taylor, the series has become a key date in the literary calendar, known for its electric atmosphere, fearless writing and high-calibre musical guests.
This January edition brings together a powerful line-up of poets and musicians. Featured poets include Anthony Anaxagorou, Joelle Taylor and Hollie McNish – each celebrated in their own right for award-winning collections, compelling performance work and a commitment to addressing the political and personal realities of contemporary life. Across the evening, audiences can expect poetry that tackles identity, justice, love, loss, memory and resistance, delivered with honesty, craft and intensity.
Live music comes from pianist and composer Karim Kamar, whose rich, emotionally driven playing provides both contrast and complement to the spoken word. Additional special guests will be announced closer to the date, adding further musical texture to the night. Between sets, resident DJ Sam “Junior” Bromfield keeps the energy high with selections of reggae, soul and R&B, ensuring the evening moves seamlessly between listening, reflection and celebration.
Presented in association with Out-Spoken, this event continues the series’ tradition of centring diverse, radical and inventive voices. It offers a space where poetry and music meet on equal terms – not as background or support, but as twin forms of storytelling and expression. The result is a live experience that feels intimate yet charged, bringing together regular followers and first-time visitors in a shared space of language, rhythm and community.
