This interactive and engaging tour winds through the quieter side streets of the City, bringing to light the remarkable lives and legacies of Black figures who have influenced Britain’s past and present. From revolutionaries to war heroes, the stories revealed will change the way you see London.
Highlights include the Black British revolutionaries of the 19th century, the real Black Panthers of the 20th century, and the journey from council houses to penthouses. You’ll also hear about Windrush World War Two heroes, the links between US and UK Civil Rights, and powerful tales of money, Mali and Mozambique.
The walk also considers how museums in London represent Black history, as well as the enduring legacies of African emperors and Caribbean resistance. Each stop along the route offers a new perspective on the city’s heritage, connecting local streets to global narratives.
Walk details will be shared via email, including the starting point and any additional instructions. The tour ends next to Postman’s Park. Please remember to wear comfortable footwear and clothing suitable for autumn weather, as the walk covers outdoor locations and lasts around two hours.
The tour is led by Tony Warner, founder of Black History Walks, which has been running walks, talks and film screenings for over 16 years. He is the author of Black History Walks Volume 1, co-author of the Pearson History GCSE textbook, and chair of the African Odysseys film programme at BFI Southbank. His expertise ensures an unforgettable journey into London’s hidden Black history.
