Sadiah Qureshi in conversation with David Olusoga about extinction

Friday 6 June

Join us for a thought-provoking evening with historian David Olusoga and author Sadiah Qureshi, as they explore the powerful themes of Qureshi’s new book Vanished: An Unnatural History of Extinction. Together, they will examine how extinction has been shaped not only by science but by empire, ideology and human choices—with devastating consequences for both people and planet.

While extinction may seem like a natural or inevitable part of life on Earth, Qureshi reveals how the concept is surprisingly modern. In the 18th century, Europeans believed species were divine and unchanging. But as scientists uncovered fossil evidence, ideas shifted—first to shock, then to acceptance, and finally to justification. By the 19th century, extinction had become a tool of empire, used to rationalise colonisation, forced migration and the erasure of Indigenous peoples.

This event will explore how the stories we tell about extinction have been shaped by politics and power—and how they continue to influence our response to today’s ecological crisis. Drawing from deep historical research, Qureshi and Olusoga will reflect on the urgent need to reconsider our place in the world, and how understanding the past can help us shape a more just and sustainable future.

Presented with support from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in the Arts (CIDRAL) at the University of Manchester, this special event is free to attend.
