Artist-in-Residence Renell Shaw presents the world premiere of Remember Us Tomorrow, the final chapter in his acclaimed Windrush Suite. More than a musical cycle, the Windrush Suite is Shaw’s living archive of Black British history – a multigenerational testimony told through melody, memory and the enduring power of community.
The first instalment paid tribute to Shaw’s grandparents’ generation, the Windrush pioneers whose courage and commitment helped rebuild post-war Britain despite the prejudice and hardship they faced. The second, Echo in the Bones, explored the experiences of their children — the British-born generation who grew up navigating questions of identity, belonging and cultural inheritance in a country that often denied their Britishness.
Remember Us Tomorrow looks forward, turning its gaze toward the present and the future. This final movement asks what it means to be of Afro-Caribbean heritage after three generations in Britain, raising a fourth in a world that is both globally connected and sharply divided. It contemplates the stories we choose to pass on, the histories we protect, and the ways in which today’s communities can ensure they are remembered with honesty and dignity by the generations to come.
Musically, Shaw’s new work blends orchestration, resonant vocals, spoken word and his unmistakable fusion of melody and rhythm. The result is a sound world that moves between intimacy and expansiveness — rooted in tradition yet boldly contemporary. With Shaw acting as musical director, conductor and vocalist, the performance becomes both a personal reflection and a communal invocation. This is Shaw’s most introspective composition to date, yet it remains grounded in the collective experiences that shape Black British identity.
As with the previous chapters, Remember Us Tomorrow balances artistic innovation with cultural stewardship. The work stands as a celebration of resilience and creativity, while also calling attention to the urgency of documenting and honouring the everyday stories that make up the Windrush legacy. Shaw brings together poetry, harmony and narrative to offer audiences not just a performance, but a guided reflection on heritage, memory and the responsibility we hold to the past and the future.
The evening concludes with a Q&A session with Renell Shaw, offering audiences an opportunity to delve deeper into the creative process, the personal history behind the Windrush Suite and the broader cultural and historical themes woven into the piece.
This event will last approximately 1 hour 10 minutes, with no interval.
