Black History Month 2026 at the Wilberforce Institute of Slavery brings communities together in Hull for an afternoon of history, learning and reflection.
Presented by Africa4U Association with partners, the event takes place at the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, one of Britain’s leading centres for research into historical and contemporary slavery.
Hull has an important connection with the history of abolition through William Wilberforce, who was born in the city and became one of the most prominent parliamentary campaigners against the transatlantic slave trade.
However, the wider history of slavery and abolition extends far beyond any single individual. It includes the resistance of enslaved African people, the work of Black abolitionists, community campaigns and generations of people who challenged systems of exploitation.
The Wilberforce Institute today examines both historic enslavement and modern forms of exploitation, connecting historical research with contemporary questions of human rights and social justice.
Taking place during Black History Month 2026, this event provides an opportunity to engage with those histories within a setting dedicated to their study.
Visitors can expect an afternoon centred on education, cultural understanding and recognising the importance of ensuring that the experiences and voices of African people remain central to the history of slavery and emancipation.
