Celebrate Black History Month with an afternoon of poetry and creativity, led by Rugby-born poet Richard Grant — better known as Dreadlock Alien. This exciting workshop is perfect for young people keen to try something new, whether they’re budding poets or complete beginners.
The session is packed with fun activities including rhyming games, interactive beatboxing and dynamic poetry performances. Dreadlock Alien’s high-energy style makes poetry accessible, engaging and a whole lot of fun.
The event takes place at Rugby Library on Saturday 4th October, from 12.20 to 3.15pm, and is free to attend. It is designed for ages 7–14, but all ages are welcome to join in the fun.
The afternoon runs in two parts: a poetry bootcamp from 12.30 to 2pm, followed by a performance from 2.30 to 3.15pm. Friends, family and the public are warmly invited to attend the performance and share in the creativity.
After the event, Richard will be signing copies of his book Ink Air. This is a great chance to take home a piece of his work and continue exploring poetry beyond the day itself.
Of Anglo-Indian and Caribbean heritage, Dreadlock Alien is a former Birmingham Poet Laureate and a leading voice in performance poetry. His work challenges ideas of a colour-divided society, explores heritage, and demonstrates how poetry can be both entertaining and a powerful tool for social change.
