BMC Forum Marks First 25 Years Of C21st British Black Music History

The Black Music Congress (BMC) forum returns to City St George's UoL to review how British Black Music has fared in the first 25 years of the 21st century through presentations & performances.

BritishBlackMusic.com (BBM) presents the return of a Black Music Congress (BMC) forum to City University, now City St Georges, University of London, after an absence of several years.

Launched in May 2002 as a monthly discussion forum with the support the late Debbie Dickinson, former head of the university’s Cultural Industries Unit, who the event is dedicated to, the event promises an electrifying evening of presentations, performances, and powerful conversations exploring British black music history, business and creativity within the first 25 years of the 21st century.

British Black Music 2000–2025: What’s The Story?, an in-person and online event on Thursday October 30 2025, forms part of the university’s Colourful Voices Series of activities marking African History Month.

Supported by City St George’s Student Union and the Office for Institutional Equity, the event features presentations from key industry figures and sector organisations who’ve been at the heart of the action – from grime, Afrobeats, jazz, gospel and beyond.

Whether you’re an artist, academic, fan, or cultural commentator, this is an opportunity to hear the stories, challenges, and triumphs that brought British black music from the margins to the mainstream.
