Sheku Kanneh-Mason Plays Bloch

Saturday 29 November

The London Philharmonic Orchestra invites audiences on a journey through time, memory and imagination in a concert of remarkable contrasts. At the heart of the evening is Sheku Kanneh-Mason, one of the most celebrated cellists of his generation, performing Bloch’s Schelomo.

Known for his expressive depth and lyrical sensitivity, Kanneh-Mason brings to life Bloch’s vivid musical vision of Biblical history and a longing for what lies ahead. His interpretation promises to be both intimate and powerful, carrying listeners into a world of profound reflection.

Performing alongside Kanneh-Mason is always an adventure for the LPO. His artistry and presence transform each collaboration into something unforgettable. In Schelomo, Bloch combines rich orchestral textures with the voice of the cello as a spiritual narrator. With Kanneh-Mason’s unique ability to connect emotionally with audiences, the music takes on a new resonance, opening doors to both past and future. This performance offers not just a piece of music, but a story told with honesty, vulnerability, and grandeur.

The evening continues with Rachmaninov’s sweeping Third Symphony, conducted by Edward Gardner. Written during the composer’s later years, the symphony is filled with nostalgia for the Russia he left behind, while also embracing the hope and vitality of new horizons. Its broad melodies, intricate harmonies, and rhythmic energy create a work of both sorrow and joy, speaking to the enduring human experience of loss, memory, and renewal. Under Gardner’s baton, the symphony promises to capture both the tenderness and majesty of Rachmaninov’s late style.

Audiences are also treated to the imaginative world of Robert Laidlow, one of Britain’s most exciting young composers. His music stretches outward beyond Earth, exploring the mysteries of the galaxy while sending a compelling and urgent message back home. Laidlow’s ability to merge futuristic soundscapes with human emotion ensures his work resonates with contemporary concerns, from the environment to our place in the cosmos. The piece adds a strikingly modern voice to a programme otherwise steeped in tradition.

Together, these works form a unique and powerful concert experience, part of the LPO’s Harmony with Nature season. From the Biblical echoes of Bloch, through the romantic nostalgia of Rachmaninov, to the interstellar imagination of Laidlow, the programme bridges past, present and future. With Sheku Kanneh-Mason’s unforgettable performance and Edward Gardner’s inspiring direction, this promises to be an evening that reminds us of music’s ability to connect worlds, across time, space, and the human heart.
