Inspired by the life of Nina Simone, Black Is the Color of My Voice is a powerful and intimate theatrical experience that blends storytelling with live music to explore the journey of an artist shaped by talent, struggle and resistance.
Written and performed by Apphia Campbell, the acclaimed one-woman show follows a successful singer and civil rights activist reflecting on her life following the death of her father. Through music and memory, the performance traces her path from a young piano prodigy to a global artist whose voice became central to the Civil Rights Movement.
Featuring many of Nina Simone’s most iconic songs performed live, the production captures both the emotional depth of her music and the political urgency of her message. At its heart, the show explores identity, race and artistic expression, revealing how personal experience and social struggle became inseparable within her work.
Having toured internationally to sell-out audiences across the UK, New York and beyond, the show has received widespread acclaim for its stripped-back staging and emotional intensity. The performance creates a direct and intimate connection between performer and audience, allowing space for reflection on legacy, resilience and the enduring impact of Black artistry.
This performance at Warwick Arts Centre forms part of the show’s UK tour, bringing its powerful storytelling to new audiences in a setting known for hosting a diverse programme of theatre, music and live performance.
