Tapestry of Black Britons

10 October – 9 November 2026

Tapestry of Black Britons comes to Hastings Museum as part of its expanding UK tour, presenting a powerful and collaborative exploration of African and Caribbean contributions to British history.

Spanning centuries—from Roman Britain to the present day—the project brings together textile art, digital design and community engagement to offer a more complete and connected national narrative. Developed through collaboration with artists, schools and community groups across the country, the exhibition reflects a wide range of voices, experiences and creative responses.

Created by Paula Ogun Hector, the project is rooted in the belief that British history is richer and more complex than often represented. Each section of the tapestry is informed by historical research while also incorporating contributions from participants, ensuring that the work remains both educational and inclusive.

The Hastings exhibition provides an opportunity to explore key themes including migration, cultural exchange, identity and legacy. It also encourages visitors to reflect on how history is told, whose stories are included, and how creative practice can help to bridge gaps in understanding.

As a “living artwork”, Tapestry of Black Britons continues to evolve as it travels, growing through community participation and engagement. Alongside the exhibition, the project has a strong educational focus, with workshops and outreach activities designed to inspire new ways of connecting with history through art and storytelling.

Visitors to Hastings Museum can expect an experience that is both informative and reflective—bringing together past and present to offer a deeper understanding of Britain’s diverse cultural heritage.
