Tapestry of Black Britons – African Romans Exhibition

1 October – December 2026

Ogun Hector commissioned an ‘African Romans in Britain’ design from  Sky Portrait Artist of the Year finalist  Alvin Kofi. This new tapestry and Kofi’s artwork  will be the centrepiece of this new exhibition devoted to the African presence in Roman Britain. This commission was funded by National Lottery Projects Grant from  Arts Council England.

Created by artist and cultural producer Paula Ogun Hector, Tapestry of Black Britons is a large-scale, collaborative artwork that reconsiders the national story—highlighting the diversity of Britain across centuries. This exhibition draws attention to the movement of people, ideas and cultures during the Roman period, presenting a more connected and inclusive understanding of early British history.

Combining traditional textile craftsmanship with contemporary digital design, the work offers a layered visual experience. Each panel is informed by historical research and shaped through collaboration with artists and communities across the UK. Through weaving, stitching and mixed media, contributors help bring these histories to life in a way that is both accessible and engaging.

The Stirling exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how histories are constructed and remembered, and to consider the long-standing presence of African communities within Britain. It also highlights the importance of recognising these narratives as an integral part of the nation’s shared heritage.

As part of a national tour running through to 2028, the project continues to grow as a “living artwork”, evolving with each new contribution. Visitors can expect a thoughtful and educational experience that brings together heritage, creativity and public engagement in a meaningfu
