The Meanings of Black History in Britain and Beyond

Thu 17 November 2016 18:00 – 20:00

Black history has been culturally and institutionally marginalised for a long time, and needs to be reclaimed. But there can be no single version of ‘black history’. Its meaning differs from person to person, from place to place and from era to era – depending on such factors as school curriculums, media clichés and stereotypes, access to historical evidence, collective traditions, patterns of mobility, and experiences of gender and class.

The Birmingham Research Institute for History and Cultures (BRIHC)  invites you to join us for this roundtable discussion which will grapple with the question of what black history means in Britain and beyond. This event is an opportunity to engage with social scientists and historians of Africa, America and the UK, and share your views on what black history means to you.

Speakers include

  • Norma Gregory (Nottingham News Centre)
  • Azeezat Johnson (University of Sheffield)
  • Kadian Pow (Birmingham City University)
  • Keith Shear (University of Birmingham)
  • Natalie Thomlinson (University of Reading)
