Join The Gains Heritage Foundation for a special afternoon exploring the life and legacy of Larry Gains, the pioneering Canadian heavyweight boxer, musician and Second World War veteran, whose story is closely linked to Southend-on-Sea.
This engaging event brings together history, live music and family-friendly activities, offering insight into Gains’ remarkable life and his lasting connection to the local area. From his performances along the Southend seafront with the Canadian Kings of Swing to his wider achievements in sport and music, the event highlights a unique and often overlooked figure in Black history.
The programme includes a dedicated exhibition exploring Gains’ life and achievements, alongside live music from Dave Octave performing Rat Pack–style swing classics. Visitors can also take part in a range of interactive activities for children, including creative workshops and discovery sessions, as well as a raffle with prizes.
Special guest speakers will include Larry Gains’ great-grandsons, sharing personal reflections on his life and legacy, alongside additional contributors. The event will also feature a special appearance from Brian Dear, former West Ham United player and European Cup Winners’ Cup champion.
The event supports the Larry Gains Memorial initiative, which aims to raise awareness of his story through education, events and fundraising. Plans are underway to create a memorial statue in Leicester, with proceeds from the event contributing towards its development.
