Stanley’s Film Club – Precious

Wed 19

To celebrate Black History Month, Stanley’s Film Club presents Precious (2009; USA). Claireece ‘Precious’ Jones is an illiterate and obese 16-year-old girl, abused by her mother and pregnant by her absent father. When she is offered the opportunity to transfer to an alternative school, she sees a chance to turn her life around and begins the journey from oppression to self-determination.

Boasting award-winning performances from a cast including Mo’Nique and Mariah Carey, Precious is a refreshingly honest film about the human capacity to grow and overcome against all odds.

The film will be introduced by Marcus Powell, a film historian and regular speaker at the BFI. Delicious Caribbean food will be provided by Brown Shuga Dumplin before the film, and free popcorn will be given to all ticket holders.
