Preach It! Understanding African Caribbean Preaching Book Launch

Tue, 30 July 2019 18:00 – 20:00

With author Rev Dr Carol Tomlin, reflections from Bishop Dr Delroy Hall, gospel singer and Caribbean food.

Studies of preaching and preaching style have up to this point often focused almost exclusively on a western eurocentric understanding of good preaching.

Preach It! encourages students, both vocational and scholarly, to look beyond these approaches and to learn from traditions with which they are less familiar.

The distinctive style and techniques that African Caribbean Pentecostal preachers have inherited has been shaped by historical, political and socio-economic factors impacting on black Caribbean people including clergy.

Preach It! reflects on these techniques, and outlines how preachers across church traditions might learn from them and use them in their own contexts.

Rev Dr Carol Tomlin is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Leeds and Honorary Fellow at the Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham. She is an award-winning educator and the leader of Restoration Fellowship Ministries.

Bishop Dr Delroy Hall is a former lecturer at Leeds Beckett University and is currently Chaplain to Sheffield United Football Club.

Hosted by Leeds Church Institute and the Centre for Religion and Public Life, University of Leeds.
