BlackChat: Archival Silences

Thursday 22 August

Archival collections are inevitably subject to archival silences, which are the result of destruction, concealment and the absence of conscious collecting for the future.

British archives frequently underrepresent the African and African Caribbean Diasporas, and the archives that do exist are from the colonial gaze. As a result, the Diasporas are often left feeling unseen in British archives.

Serendipity’s Living Archive is collecting and documenting the histories of African and African Caribbean communities and platforming their important contributions to British life.

Join us for a roundtable discussion about the existing archival silences and explore how to challenge and address these silences for a more representative archive.
