A Celebration of James Baldwin at 100

Friday 2 August

Join the LSE Webster Review of International History and the Phelan US Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science for a special event honouring the legendary writer James Baldwin on what would have been his 100th birthday.

This celebration will include discussions and reflections on Baldwin’s impactful work and enduring legacy. There will be the opportunity to purchase recent and classic works on Black history at a sale organised by Jacaranda Books, and a free lunch will also be provided!

Black History Walks, a pioneering organisation that explores the thousands of years of African/Caribbean history in London, will deliver a talk on James Baldwin’s relationship with the city. There will also be a talk from Rosanna Amaka, the author of The Book of Echoes and Rose and the Burma Sky.

This event will also celebrate the winners of the LSE Webster Review’s essay competition for secondary school students: Reflecting on Race, Culture and Society in the UK Through Time. Winning students will join a panel discussion to present their essays and to answer audience questions.

This event is free and open to all with an interest in James Baldwin, history, and celebrating the work of talented students.
