Camden Black History Season: Headties and Headwraps

Exploring the complex history of turbans, headties and headwraps with a virtual workshop,imagery and showing of the film Wax Print

This casual and informative workshop will celebrate the beauty and artistry of the modern African head wraps. We will begin by exploring the background and cultural significance of wearing head scarves. We will discuss the early colonial practice of shaving the heads of black slaves in order to eradicate their sense of culture and identity. We will learn the significance of the fabric from which we will explore through ‘Wax Print film’ which will also include a Q and A with the director Aiwan Obinyan. From there, you will receive guidance to learn several wrapping techniques. Bring your favorite scarves to practice with!

African print and solid headscarves will also be available to purchase at the event.

From the villages of Indonesia to the cotton fields of America, from European industrial mills to the bustling markets and sewing schools of West Africa, the story of one fabric and how it came to symbolise a continent, it’s people and their struggle for freedom.
