All are welcome to join us in person at the Gallery for an interactive creative workshop exploring the work on paper of October Gallery artist Aubrey Williams, and the installation that includes photographs, assemblages and 3D projection video ‘Looking for Edmonia’ by contemporary artist Gisela Torres.
During the workshop we will be exploring creative ways to unpack the ‘untold’ histories of African heritage artists, and giving practical tips about how these narratives can be shared in schools and community settings.
The session will begin with a unique tour and talk about the photographic series ‘Looking for Edmonia’ (Self-Portrait) by the artist Gisela Torres. Edmonia Lewis was the first woman of African and Native American heritage to achieve international fame and recognition in the fine arts world during the 19th Century. Gisela will share her creative response to the life and art of Edmonia and her personal journey within this historical narrative.
This will be followed by an hour-long expressive making workshop, responding to the work of October Gallery artist Aubrey Williams. During the workshop we will be creating our own ‘self-portraits’ using plaster bandage and low-tech intaglio printing techniques. The workshop will be led by art educator Esther Adesigbin who will be talking about the guiding principles of her Black Curriculum 365 practice and talking about how these principles are shared through making art with the children and young people she works with.
