Reel Histories – Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story

Wednesday 29 October

Reel Histories is a bold and compelling film programme for Black History Month 2025 that amplifies the cinematic legacies of Black communities across the globe.

From poetic reflections on the Windrush generation to revolutionary struggles in the Caribbean, South America and the UK, these films explore themes of resistance, visibility and identity. Through a vibrant mix of narrative, documentary and short films, Reel Histories invites audiences to engage with stories that are both hidden and celebrated.

One of the highlights of the programme is Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story (Certificate 15), a feature documentary that charts the life of Pauline Black, lead singer of the pioneering band The Selecter. With honesty and insight, Black reflects on her journey as a trailblazing figure in British music, whose work continues to resonate in a world grappling with issues of gender, politics, race and identity.

In the film, Pauline Black revisits key moments in her life and career, offering a personal and powerful account of what it meant to be a Black woman in a male-dominated and often politicised music scene. Her story is not only one of musical achievement, but also of resilience and activism, making her a vital voice in the cultural and political landscape.

Following the screening, audiences will have the rare opportunity to hear directly from Pauline Black in an In Conversation event. This discussion will delve deeper into her creative legacy, her views on identity and activism, and the impact of her work both past and present.

Tickets are priced at £10, with a concession rate of £8, plus a £1 booking fee. The Reel Histories Pass, available for £45, offers full access to the BHM Official Launch, all screenings and in conversation events within the programme, along with a complimentary drink at each screening.
