Windrush Voices: In Their Own Words

Monday 22nd June 2026

Join Windrush Voices for a special Windrush Day celebration honouring the stories, experiences and legacy of Nottingham’s Windrush generation.

Presented on National Windrush Day, Windrush Voices: In Their Own Words shines a spotlight on ten local elders whose journeys helped shape the city’s Caribbean community. Over recent months, the Windrush Voices team has travelled across Nottingham recording personal testimonies, preserving memories and capturing stories that might otherwise be lost to time.

The evening will feature the premiere screening of a series of short films, each offering an intimate portrait of a member of the Windrush generation. Through their own words, audiences will hear firsthand accounts of migration, community, resilience and belonging, creating a powerful record of lived experience for future generations.

Following the screenings, guests will have the opportunity to hear directly from some of the elders during a live panel discussion, exploring their memories, reflections and hopes for the future. The programme will also feature spoken word performances, live entertainment and music celebrating the cultural heritage of the Caribbean.

A live band will perform sounds inspired by ska, calypso and other Caribbean musical traditions, while steel pan music will provide a vibrant soundtrack to the evening. Caribbean food and refreshments will be available from arrival, creating a welcoming atmosphere for attendees of all ages.

Supported by the Windrush Day Grant Scheme 2026, this community event offers a unique opportunity to celebrate Nottingham’s Windrush heritage while ensuring that these important stories continue to be shared and remembered.
