Discover songs, rhythms and harmonies from diverse African and African diasporic traditions in this friendly adult singing course for all abilities.
This uplifting series from CALAT offers a practical introduction to singing for complete beginners, people returning to singing and anyone who simply enjoys using their voice for pleasure and relaxation.
Participants will explore songs and musical traditions with African roots, including material from several African countries and the African American tradition.
The sessions will introduce the cultural background and musical style of each song before helping the group learn accessible versions of rounds and harmony pieces. Participants will then discover some of the more complex approaches used within the songs’ countries and cultures of origin.
The classes provide a relaxed and supportive environment in which people can develop their voices, learn new repertoire and experience the enjoyment of singing with others.
No previous singing experience is required. Every voice and level of confidence is welcome, including people who have previously been told that they cannot sing.
The three-week course originally began on Wednesday 30th September. The remaining sessions take place on Wednesday 7th and Wednesday 14th October. Anyone hoping to join after the first session should contact CALAT before enrolling to confirm that late enrolment is available.
The course reference is CTP559-26.
Participants should bring a bottle of water, as singing can be thirsty work.
CALAT courses are generally available to eligible adult learners aged 19 or over who permanently live within a London borough. Check the enrolment page for complete eligibility and payment information.
