Experience an uplifting evening of exceptional musicianship as Suntou Susso and a powerhouse line-up of Gambian artists bring the sounds of West Africa to Slough.
Suntou Susso is a virtuoso kora player, singer-songwriter and composer from The Gambia. Born into the Griot tradition, he combines a deep respect for West African musical heritage with a bold and contemporary approach to performance.
His compositions are rooted in Afro-Manding and Griot musical traditions while drawing inspiration from folk, funk, jazz and soul.
For this special performance, Suntou will be joined by an outstanding line-up of Gambian musicians performing together in the United Kingdom for the first time.
The concert follows the release of Suntou’s award-winning second album, Jaliya Silokang – The Path of a Griot. The album explores the place of the Griot within a changing and increasingly connected world.
For generations, Griots have played a vital role within West African communities. Through music, poetry and oral storytelling, they preserve history, pass knowledge between generations and serve as advisers, peacekeepers and guardians of cultural memory.
Drawing on his own experiences and the wisdom of elders and young people, Suntou’s music carries this ancient tradition forward while exploring contemporary questions of heritage, identity and hope.
Audiences can expect the beautiful sound of the kora, powerful vocals, lively rhythms and music filled with warmth and feel-good energy.
This is an opportunity to experience the richness of Gambian musical culture while seeing artists who are both protecting an important tradition and creating its future.
The event is open to everyone.
