Sheffield Cathedral to Honour Black Communities at Special Civic Service

Sheffield Cathedral will bring together churches, community organisations, gospel music and local voices for a special Black History Month civic service later this month.

The Cathedral will host its third annual Black History Month Community Civic Service on Sunday 25 October, with this year’s gathering centred on the national theme Honouring Our Communities.

The free event will celebrate the contribution, resilience and strength of Black communities across Sheffield while providing an opportunity to reflect on those whose work has helped shape the city.

Local speakers from Black-led churches will take part alongside community organisations, with gospel music forming an important part of the evening.

The keynote speaker will be Dr Delroy Hall.

The service will also include an Act of Remembrance for people who have died since the Covid-19 pandemic.

While Black History Month often focuses on important individuals from the past, this year’s theme also asks Britain to recognise the people contributing to communities today.

That can include faith leaders, volunteers, youth workers, carers, teachers, campaigners, healthcare professionals and the many others whose work rarely receives national recognition.

The Sheffield gathering reflects that approach by bringing established institutions and grassroots organisations together in the same space.

The Cathedral says the evening will look not only at Black communities’ contributions past and present, but towards a future of empowerment, unity and growth.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
