Cardiff Celebration to Put Afro-Welsh Heritage Centre Stage

African heritage and Welsh identity come together in Cardiff for a free celebration of culture, fashion, music and community.

Celebrating Our Afro-Welsh Heritage: Culture, Community & Connection takes place at Canton Community Hub on Saturday 17 October as part of Black History Month.

Organised by Diaspora Voices Cymru, in collaboration with Christown Empire, the event will bring communities together for an afternoon celebrating African heritage, diaspora culture and multicultural Wales.

Visitors can expect traditional African drumming, an African fashion parade, displays of fabrics and creative work, community conversations and opportunities to make new connections.

Christown Empire will also showcase specially created fashion pieces celebrating communities and multicultural identity.

The gathering forms part of the Belonging Together Cymru Project and also coincides with Nigerian Independence Month.

At the heart of the event is a simple idea: African and Welsh identities do not have to exist separately.

The growth of Black communities across Wales has created new generations whose stories are part of both African heritage and contemporary Welsh life.

Black History Month provides an important opportunity to recognise those connections and celebrate the contribution Black communities are making to modern Wales.

Organisers say people from every background are welcome, whether African, Welsh, part of the wider diaspora or simply interested in culture and community.
